Description
The new record of the excellent violist Atsushi Sakaï brings together pieces of Couperin and Forqueray. The programme is wreathed in an atmosphere of mystery as well as the genesis of the works. If the paternity of Couperin's pieces for viols can be attributed to François since the beginning of the 20th century, that of Forqueray is still uncertain. And it is this enigmatic aura of the scores that inspires Atsushi Sakaï and his partners. Their interpretation is nourished and adorned with a touching charm. The melancholy, even the gloomy vibe of the works, alternates with frank cheerfulness in the dances from Couperin’s First Suite. As always with Atsushi Sakaï and his musicians, the flawless technique at the service of the baroque grace is a continuous wonder.
